I thought I would give Mitts a try since I've done a little bit of everything else. I used Deborah Norville's SERENITY chunky yarn. If you do decide to use a different yarn than your pattern calls for, be sure to do your swatch ahead of time. I didn't bother to do that, and yes, these are beautiful, but just a tad too big.

I received this question this evening from a knitter who is having trouble with knitting a fingerless knit pattern. Can you help this knitter?

Has anyone made the smocked fingerless mitts by Tonia Barry from the 60 Quick Knits book?
I am stuck on a step and I need help figuring out what to do next.
On page 64, thumb placement, it says to work sts 1-4 twice which would make 8 stitches and put them on waste yarn, and then slip these 8 sts back to LH needle, then with working yarn, work sts 1-4 twice more. Continue to follow chart to rnd 8, then repeat rnds 1-8 once more, then rnds 1-4 once. Work in k2, p2 rib for 2 rnds. Bind off in rib.
Now my problem: When I've made mittens in the past, once I put stitches onto waste yarn I leave them there until I have finished the hand and go back and pick them up and make the thumb. This pattern seems to say that I work the 8 stitches for two times more and then continue on with the rest of the row following the chart. And also, why would I have 16 stitches when I begin the thumb?? Live sts? Not something I know either. If someone can help me figure this out so I can finish the mitt I will be so grateful. I love the pattern, it looks awesome. I am just not able to finish it as I have tried almost everything and don't know what is right. Thank you.

Handspun Cashmere Wristlets

I finally finished the knitted wristlets I'd been planning using this free pattern. The yarn is so decadent, it was handspun by me using 100% cashmere top which gave me 150 yards of yarn in 2 ounces.

The pattern itself was super simple and easy to make. The construction is very easy, it's knit flat and then seamed. I only had enough yarn to knit 4 repeats but they are the perfect size and super luxurious.

Another knit down and tossed into my christmas gift pile!

Last night as I was out walking boy it was getting cold! My hands were freezing and it got me thinking about fingerless mitts and what I wanted to knit this fall season.

Anyone else up for a knit along? We could have a few patterns as part of the knit along and I'm considering designing a pattern too (top down so we can use up every inch of yarn!)

As for this, they immediately seen through the eyes of the imagination, as soon as I started to do this sleeves.

Nevertheless, I am very very proud of them ^ ^

They are the nicest in my opinion made so far, perhaps because most get in my taste-this time with crochet lace and nice color.

I think if that does not conjure up a similar, because all of this mine are not even started, and I have more ideas.

I love knitting and crocheting, and other handmade, so for this fall I made some pairs of new, colorful mittens. They're for other person but I would like to make another for my own ^^

I hate cold days... brrrr.

This pattern was born in my mind while doing it.

I using needle nr 5 [5mm], and various violet and purple acrylic yarns- Oliwia, Yarn Art and Sonia.

Pattern Stitches:
K1, P1, Ribbing [for cable]

Row 1: *k1, p1; rep from *= 28 "chains"
Repeat Row 1 12 more times.

Change the color [yarn]. This is time for cable.

You can find easy pattern for simple cable ^^

And after you'll knitting this part [ex. 16-20 rows] it's time for repeat row 1, until it'll have proper size- I repeat row 1 5 more times.

It's too hard for describe, because my English is not good enough... :(

Hi there! I noticed several people were looking for the Pomatomus fingerless gloves pattern - here is the link, from the Winter 2005 issue of Knitty online knitting magazine. It was originally a sock pattern, but others have adapted it to a fingerless glove pattern. One example is here, and another is available in Ravelry as a free download.

The pattern is also available as Nereid Fingerless Gloves.

First Attempt!

This was my attempt at a fingerless mitt. I went a little overboard. It is a very simple knit, however, I spun the yarn myself from the shedding from my Great Pyrenees, Sammie! It is very soft and surprisingly, does not shed!

This is my first attempt at a cable. I think it came out fine, but next time, I think I'll check my gauge first. It is a little large for me!

I raise Shetland Sheep and spin yarn, so I think it appropriate for my next fingerless mitts I will make with my own wool! I'll keep you all posted!

Here is my 93 year old Grandma enjoying her first pair of fingerless mittens. My Aunt saw a picture of another pair I had made and e mailed me to make a pair for Grandma. Her hands are always cold and she loves to do crossword puzzles. Now her hands will be toasty in these mittens in her favorite color. I used the Fetching pattern and Simply Soft yarn so she can wash them when they get dirty.

This pattern is called Marvelous Mitts by Karen Neal. I was really happy with the way they turned out. I used Cherry Tree Hill Supersock yarn in the Country Garden colorway, solid black Koigu KPM sock yarn and 2.25 mm needles.
The right mitt is according to the pattern (I did add more corrugated rib at the wrist and before the BO). The left mitt I made some stranded design changes that I thought worked better with the busy varigated pattern yarn. So these mitts are fraternal, not identical.

I can't believe that I forgot to post these. I completed them back in August and they have been just perfect for the cool Fall and this bitterly cold Winter!

This is the only decent photo I have of them and I did eventually finish the thumb gussett. I used Renaissance Yarn on size 7 dpns for my narrow hands and wrists. This project really whipped up quick and I'm not the fastest knitter but I managed to complete these in about 10 days! All other details can be found on Ravelry.

Yes 3 months ago here in Chicago was perfect weather for fingerless mitts. Last month would have been nice too since the heat wasn't working at my job. But getting these mitts has been a long journey and it isn't even over yet!
When I decided that i needed them I had my heart set on Eunny Jang's Endpapers but Eunny's website with the pattern was not working so I hunted around ravelry for others who had made the pattern and and found Monica to send me the pattern. I had this really great forest green koigu that I am in love with and this Lorna's laces that would give a nice stripe background, if it would stripe nicely. it didn't. RRRIIIIPPPP! Both of these yarns were in my stash and I really like them and I have had a particularly difficult time finding a good pattern for the lorna's laces. Ok So maybe I try a different pattern with Just the Lorna's. I kinda liked the Nereid and thought that might look nice in shades of ecru and grey and purpley-bluey black. One repeat into the cuff and I didn't like it. RRRIIIPPPP! My heart was totally set on the Endpapers. I liked the fair isle. I had never done fair isle and the stranding would make an almost double layered mitt so it would be extra warm. I gave in. I went to my fave knitting store and stared at the koigu wall. I liked gray as contrast to the dark green but camel would be nice too and look at this nice berry burgundy. It matches my coat. And there is the green-blue mix that i making a scarf out of... i love koigu. its not a yarn crack problem that I have it is a koigu crack problem that i have. Anyway I bought a gray that didn't stray too far from its muted color range-it is almost a solid, another ball of green-i don't know why. One is enough for this project. i also bought the berry burgundy and an olive green mix. So i can make another pair! crack. Its like crack. i just can't stop. It totally could have been worse and I got a free tote bag with my purchase! So now it is almost January and I have one mitt done. Almost. I have to cast off in the fancy cast off it recommends. And I still have to knit the other one. they should be ready for next fall since winter in Chicago requires industrial grade thinsulate and a minimum of 16 layers to keep one luke warm.

Sarah's yarn is oh-so-soft and lovely to knit.

Alpaca Zigzag Mitts

I wanted to share my latest fingerless mitts project - I cast on this weekend as a Christmas gift for my grandma.

The pattern is from interweave fall 2008 and they are called the "fresco fair isle mitts." Here's the ravelry link to other projects. I chose to knit them in blue sky alpaca and silk for a little stashbusting. My gma's hands are tiny so I went down two needle sizes. I can't decide what to do with the top part though, I don't love the ribbing at the top of the fingers. It's kind of loose since the alpaca doesn't have a lot of memory. Any ideas??

I love the back detail too - so cute!

Granny mitts for fall

I've been quite obsessed with granny squares lately, looking everywhere for vintage patterns (mostly from the 70s, ah those funky colors !!)

And so anyways, I wanted to make some mini mitts with granny squares. I looked around and saw there was hardly any available, and the one there was was not my taste. So I designed my own.. and I love them !! I made those Granny mitts with 2 colors of Silk Garden by Noro. (I've also made another pair using only one skein of the same color but I think I prefer the 2 colors one)

I have already made several pairs, so quick and such a satisfying project ! My friend claimed my second pair, and I'm finishing a third pair for my 4 yo with some dk yarn and a smaller hook.. :-)

These were a quick and easy project. I probably could have made them in a day if it weren't for the usual interruptions. I immediately started another pair for my Dad.

I knit some cabled arm-warmers for my friend Anna. These were long overdue, and I'm very happy to have them done. We're going to consider them an early birthday present, even though her birthday is in November. The pattern is pretty much my own, and the cable pattern is borrowed from a book even if it is a really simple one. I intentionally off-set the cables and I think they look pretty cool.

A Different Kind of Fingerless Glove... :(

Most UNfortunately, I have a new fingerless glove I need to wear - and it's not knitted! I have been having intermittent pain and numbness in my left arm, from fingertips to neck and shoulder blade. It seems after an orthopedic exam and x-rays that I have both carpal tunnel (in the left wrist) and a pinched nerve due to arthritis in the neck. :( I have known about both problems and had issues in the past, but with restarting my knitting in earnest again, they are resurfacing unpleasantly. I am going to be having physical therapy, and also probably an MRI (to see the extent of the problem in the neck). I am hoping that it will not impact my knitting too much - I love it so! I guess it's not the best time to want to take up spinning, either, but what's a fiber-loving knitter to do?? I'm hoping I can learn to do these things without damaging my arm and neck any further. (At least, I'm determined to try!)

I'd love to hear from anyone who has dealt with similar issues... especially if there are tricks to dealing with them and still knitting regularly!

I started these mittens at the beginning of April. They've been on my year long gift along list since the beginning of the year and I'm finally making progress on them. I think part of what helps is that I've decided to knit them both at the same time. I'd say they're about 30 % done. I'm using the Big Braid cable from Interweave's cables stitchonary and I'm very happy with how it's going.

Pattern: Cherry Red Handwarmers, by Creativeyarn

Yarn: Jaeger Extra Fine Merino DK (sadly discontinued)
Needles: US 5 Lantern Moon rosewood straights

Notes:

DK-weight is the way to go with this pattern. The pattern's yarn specifications are slightly cryptic, because Creativeyarn is Italian and yarn is categorized differently there. The mesh pattern is slightly looser than the ribbing. The ribbing itself is slightly tight on my arms, so I would go up one needle size for the arm ribbing, then stick with the smaller needles for the lace pattern and hand ribbing. I'm a big fan of this yarn; it's too bad that it has been discontinued. It's very springy and soft.

Following the purple pair below, I made another pair of red Serpentine mitts for my sister's birthday, as her office is chilly in winter. (Again the mysterious Chinese sock/baby wool yarn.)

They were again a quick and pleasing project, and the pattern is highly recommended.
This is a good project to practise cabling without a needle.
I even worked on the cable panel on my bus/subway/streetcar commute!

However that may have been a real moment of hubris, as I made an error on the last cable row. When I tried to correct it with a crochet hook (not on a moving vehicle) I actually made the situation much worse, and ended up ripping the whole thing. If I had added a lifeline at the start of the cable panel I would not have had to do the ribbing all over .... however I think it only took two or three days of commuting to recreate the glove.

I managed to keep up with my somewhat unrealistic goals of making fingerless mitts for my colleagues at the office in a fairly short time. I started the purple pair in November, but made all the Noro ones in December (to be handed out on 18 Dec).

For the purple Serpentine pair, I used some mysterious Chinese 100% wool sock/baby-weight yarn. The pink ball-band has a nice photo of some sheep on it, and it comes in 100g balls. I think it cost about $1.20 CAD a ball in Beijing.
I really like this pattern and already used it again since then. I used the charts without any problems, but my friend who used the word instructions found errors in some of the rows.

I found the ribbed Maine Morning Mitt pattern (scroll down at that URL to download free PDF) also very clear and easy, and made three pairs from Noro Kureyon for my remaining colleagues.
The non-ribbed pair was from a free web pattern, and my problem with that one was that it required more than one ball of Noro to complete the pair.
While I am not sure my colleagues would mind if the mitts were really not matched, I tried to work with the Noro as best I could to make them somewhat similar.
I was not happy with the knots in the Noro, and am not sure I would use it again for this type of project.

One of the patterns explained the stretchy sewn bindoff, which I used on all of the above mitts.

I believe all the mitts were happily received!

I really liked knitting these fingerless mitts. They were quick and easy. I really liked the way the thumb knit up... I don't really like picking up stitches because I always get annoying gaps so these thumbs were great. These were for a friend's birthday and I worried I wouldn't finish in time... but it was no problem. Great pattern.

Made for a friend who is a professional musician, and who is a Native American, these mitts start with my Mini-Mitts pattern (on 48 stitches rather than 40 for a large man's hand, and 20 + 4 gusset stitches rather than 16 + 4), and then I unvented the feather motif, which I am rather fond of. Dashing to Dementia

This is my second pair of Dashing. Don't ask me how I managed to twist the cables in such a disjointed fashion. The yarn, Zara, is wonderful. I'm doing them on size 6 needles and using the larger pattern.

I unwittingly was consistent with this dementia theme on my second glove. I just realized that I used the standard size instructions so my second glove will be a bit more snug, ugh. At least I got the cables right so far... Stay tuned.

Belated Christmas gift

I knew I was biting off more than I could chew when in October I decided I would give each of the seven people in my immediate family a pair of handknit socks. My strategy was to use worsted weight yarn and fatter needles so fewer stitches-per-sock.

I wasn't really surprised when just a day or two before Christmas I was short by two pair. Regardless, that was an impressive binge of sock-knitting for a person at my skill level.

Anyhoo, I decided I could whip out a scarf for one unfortunate sockless person and a pair of Broad Street Mittens (from Knitty.com) for the other. In two days. Here it is January 20 and I haven't finished that scarf yet. Why did I think I could do all those cables with no cabling experience?

I did, however, finish the fingerless gloves only two days late, with only a few things I will change on the next pair. One of the thumbs turned out a little odd, but not odd enough to frog. And the supply list DID call for two sizes of needles, but I'll be darned if I could find where in the pattern it said to use which. I used size 5 US but apparently I should have started with 4s and switched to 5s for the mitten-top. I thought about adding a touch of duplicate-stitch embroidery in the green, but since they were already late, and the weather was bitter cold, I decided to go ahead and give the gift. I think he liked them.

Mermaid Gloves

I wanted to share something with you that I DIDN'T knit actually. I had been wanting to knit mermaid gloves for ages but could never find the time so Angelika and I did a trade, I sent her the yarn to knit these (beautiful Koigu from Rhea), and she knit them, and in exchange I'm hand-dyeing some lace yarn for her. Hmm.... I think I may have gotten the better end of the deal, I better send her some extra goodies too! =)

Aren't they gorgeous??? She even matched up the pattern to the thumb gusset and made me pretty little fingers too. The little fingers make me happy, hehe! ;)

I made this pair of fetching fingerless mitts for my mom for the holidays. I finished them several weeks ago, but of course they could not be revealed until Christmas. I wanted her to be able to wear them typing at work, so I just picked up the stitches for the thumb and bound off as loosely as possible. It seemed to work pretty well! I managed to squeeze in 3 pairs of fingerless mitts, starting in November. Not too bad!

The Fourth Pair

I knit another pair of mitts just in time. I knit these for one of my daughter's friend (I have one more pair to knit for another friend, but won't get them done by tomorrow). These are knit in Cascade 220 Superwash - Purple. I used the Piano Mitt pattern with my sister Monica's thumb instructions. They turned out very nice. I'm going to knit the other pair the same way but in a different color (possibly brown or pink if I can find some in my stash). This has been a lot of fun...thanks for a great KAL!

After a pathetic showing on my part for this knitalong, I've finally got something to show! Here are my mitts based on the Inga hat pattern. I think they turned out pretty well, despite some last minute adjustments after running out of yarn. More details on my blog. I did one repeat of the chart, 40 stitches around. If you're good at stranded knitting, I think these can be pretty rewarding. For my part, I'm still working on that skill, but that's what this project was all about!

Fingerless Mitts for a Preteen

Here’s my latest variation on my free basic fingerless mitt pattern:
Mitts for my 12-year-old daughter for Christmas!

I added a cable up the back for fun. Knit in Dream in Color’s Smooshy Sock Yarn, colorway Black Parade. Because I wanted these sturdy enough to hold up to hard wear/outdoor wear (as opposed to the Piano Mitts, which were designed more to wear indoors), I knit them on smaller needles, size 1 US, so therefore cast on 48 stitches instead of 40. Otherwise, the gusset etc. is the same as my basic pattern. She likes them!

(At least based on the fact that she didn’t take them off all day, pretty much.)

I finished the fingerless gloves for my son. He has been wanting these for quite some time. I made him a pair of fingerless mitts, but he really wanted fingerless gloves. So I broke down and made him a pair, even though I hate making all those fingers. These were knit in Black Cascade 220 on size 5 dpns. I made the pattern up as I went along to fit his hand.

in my family has seen them, they want a set. They work up pretty
quick.. The yarn that I used was T L C Essentials. The color was

Four Days Late

I finish my projects after everybody else on KALS has moved onto other things. At least I get the benefit of being inspired by all the postings. These are only four days late, so that is s record for me.

These are Fetching fingerless gloves by Cheryl Niamath, published in the Summer 06 issue of Knitty.com. They are made in Debbie Bliss cashmerino aron in color 300610, deep red. I used two circular size five needles because my hand is small and I wanted them extra dense for warmth. Two cable repeats were added at the wrist, four extra rows in the body, another cable repeat by the fingers, and an additional four rounds at the thumb. They are warm and toasty and I am very pleased.

I made these for my friend Rita...I can't show them on my blog in case she sees them there. My first pair of fetching and what an easy and delightful pattern! I added an extra row of cables around the fingers and cast off using a 2 stitch eye cord and decreased the purl stitch on the edge to make it a firmer fit. It works they look neat. I do like my mitts to come down to my knuckles!

Oh and I received the most amazing package from my mitt swap partner Jodi today...I mean REALLY amazing...I am just about to blog about it in amongst some other photos. What a lucky me!!

So, I got my package from Keisha ages ago, and have been loving my mitts!! I've also eaten up some of the treats she sent me, but kept the packaging to photograph... I *just* finished 9 finals in the course of a week and a half, so I was kinda busy up until now. Had a terrible fiasco at the airport yesterday trying to get back home. And what do I do? I forget to take a picture (not to mention the camera itself) when I was at my apartment back at school. *sigh* I promise to get a pic up of my beautiful package and goodies (I love the stitch markers, they are so creative and pretty!) when I get back, but that won't be until January! In the meantime, I just have to tell Keisha how wonderful and well received her gift was. :o)

Almost Finished

My daughter had several friends request fingerless mitts for Christmas. She decided that would be the easiest was to go. She came home and asked if I had yarn in my stash in light blue, black, teal and gray ..... that I didn't need ... what ???? I don't have yarn I don't need. What was she thinking. Anyway I did end up searching through the stash to help her out. And then I ended up knitting the majority of them. Funny how that happens. I feel a little bit sorry for the one getting the baby blue ones as it is Red Heart baby yarn. The teal pair is Classic Elite Posh cashmere and silk and the other is a very nice handspun merino I got in an exchange. It has been wonderful to knit with .

She did knit one pair almost on her own. I have to do the join so she doesn't end up with a moebius, and I pick up and start the thumb for her. And I have to weave in all the ends. Otherwise this pair is all hers. I told her I was not knitting a shirtless sleeve. I hate knitting sleeves and this is definitely too close to that.

I have two other pair almost finished and will post them later.

Noriko did a great job with all kinds of goodies for me. The fingerless mittens are pure and simple decadence! Merino, plum, simple and gorgeous! It appears that she used a twisted knit stitch, which adds a little dimension. She included lots of candy probably enough to get sick on. Hello Pandas and Japanese candy. Some beads that I am going to of course make stitch markers with and lip balm. My favorite part is she gave me skein of the yarn she used so I am going to make a matching Free-Standing Muffler.

So these mitts have all been finished for quite some time, but I finally got around to blocking them. The turquoise pair was mailed off to Anchorage yesterday, the green pair are for me and the final pair is going to be mailed tomorrow. I'm done with endpapers for a while now, but I do plan on working on the mirror twist mitts next! (Sorry about the blurry pixs, when I compressed the pictures to upload they got a little messy!)

Hello all, you have been making some amazing mitts! I'm so excited to be here! Mitts make my life bearable. My hands area almost always cold, so I can never have too many pairs of mitts.

Here are a few I've been cranking out this fall...

First up, we have Rannoch, designed by Corinne of Knit 1, Purl 2, Stab. Loved this pattern. I made 2 fewer repeats and ditched the thumb, but that was due to my lack of skill and time (this was a gift for an admin). I made mine with WoolEase in Cranberry on 12" circular addi turbo size 8. These are definitely on my short list for me to make for myself in the new year.

Next, we have Fetching, from knitty. I skipped the picot bind-off and the thumb. Lovely knit as well. If I make these again, I think I'll make them longer and maybe with fewer stitches so they cling more to my arm. These were also a gift, and well received.

My Composed Mitts Are Done!

Hi, I just joined this blog and I am really impressed by the number of beautiful completed Fingerless Mitts. My Composed Mitts from Interweave Fall '07 are done just in time for our first snowfall. They are blocking and will be ready for wear in the morning. I am very pleased with the results...These mitts are absolutely gorgeous!

This was a great knit to practice fair isle or color standing knitting. I am a bit rusty in this area but the pattern directions/charting were easy to follow and needed no major adjustments. I would recommend this pattern to an advance beginner who wants to learn fair isle or knit something fun with more than one color.

I used Berrocco Ultra Light instead of the Blue Sky Alpaca that is used in the original. Berrocco Ultra Light's color selection is awesome for those who love rich vibrant colors. The five colors that I used are not an exact match to the original pattern but they are close and I was able to result the same visual impact. I have a lot of yarn left over but I am considering knitting these mitts again in another color palette.

With size 4 6"Chia Goo bamboo double point needles I was able to get gauge. I ordered these needles to try them out. My experience is that they appear to get better with use. On these needles, Berrocco Ultra Light knits up soft and airy. The wool definitely adds strength and provide the memory effect to the yarn. I was concerned that my mitts would grow with wear if I used 100% Alpaca.

I have finally finished Dashing. My first fingerless mitts and my first cables! I chose Dashing because I figured the simple cable was a good one to learn on. So they aren't symmetrical so what? So the mittens are slightly different lengths? So what? I'm happy so there!

I'm quite happy with the results, and I do hope the recipient will be happy with them as well. The pattern calls for English Tweed which Wool-Tyme didn't seem to have (as per their website) so I used Silk Dream (Lang) which is 50% Merino and 50% Silk and is very very soft. The gauge was perfect and the fit it lovely. Knit up on size 3.5mm dpns, I declare these mittens a success! Original Pattern here.

I received a fantastic package on Monday from my swap partner, Angelika. My son had kept me up most of the night, I was not in the best of spirits, and the package was definitely a great pick-me-up! I am very impressed by the mitts--they fit like a glove, er, mitt, they're in my favorite colors, and I can tell that it took much skill to create them. Bravo, Angelika! I am impressed by your talents!

Mr.'s Mitts F.O.

I finished a pair of mitts for the hubby last night. He was kind enough to model them for a pic or two... The yarn is Paton's Shetland Chunky in # 03031 - Earthy Brown. It's a nice rich brown, and the feel is thick and soft. I used the pattern for Dashing (size large) without the cables. The cables got too confusing doing these as a take-along project. There were too many interruptions, and I had to keep ripping them out because I lost my place or made a mistake. I do plan to make him a pair of Dashing Mitts, though, when I am not in a hurry with so many Christmas gifts to do.

I signed up as the last swap partner. I really wanted to and couldn't talk myself, a student, out of it, even though the BIG assignment loomed overhead. I was partnered with Noriko, who lives less then 700 miles from me now, and is also in school, studying optometry. What is so funny is that I am a veterinary technician and can not stand anything dealing with eyes, I tear up just thinking about it, and my poor optometrist, they should just sedate me.
She says she loves pink, and rides her bike to school. So off I went to ravelry to look through a few convertable mittens patterns and found my favorite. I ordered the book though amazon see my blog for story. I found the best yarn, jitterbug, and even found the cutest beads I turned into buttons. I had to change the pattern a little because they were so small but I think they make the gloves.
