Any tips?

Hi, everyone. I'm reworking my Mac & Me Lobster Claws fingerless mitts (although I don't know that they qualify as true fingerless mitts because they do have half-fingers). I've written about them here on my blog. My problem is that I get gaping holes at the base of the fingers when I have to pick up my stitches. I plan to fix that when I weave in ends, but in the meantime, I was wondering whether anyone had tips for picking up stitches that would leave smaller or, hope against hope, no holes. Thanks!

I will post WIP pictures shortly, unless I finish the mitts tonight, then I will post FO pictures!

(oh, and no pun intended--really!--with the post title)

I don't really have any tips to eliminate the holes. I get them too.
I make sure I leave a 12 inch tail when I attach the yarn to pick up and knit and then (like you said you plan on doing) I use the tail to weave (or darn) the holes after the fingers are knit.
I'll be interested in seeing if anyone else has tips on this because I guess I could use them too.

I'd recommend to pick up two extra stitches on each side of the finger and then knit them together in the next row. So if you pick up 5, reduce them to 3 and also you might want to twist those picked up stitches.

The other thing (angelika has good info there) is to be sure you are picking up a full stitch, or pick up 1.5 stitches down.

Thanks, everyone, for your tips! I'm going to try Angelika's on the thumb (it's all I have left to do), and if I can't do a good job darning, I'll redo the fingers. But I'll certainly try it on the next set of mitts.

Thanks, Vanessa--I'm hoping to get some good knitting time in today!

I'm with angelika, picking up the extra stitches and k2tog will help with the holes and you can use the ends when you weave in to close any extra little holes.

Can't wait to see your FO! =)

some good advice there, I will use that info when I make socks too!

Agree with the comments above plus you could try to knit that "made" stitch twisted.
