I knit a pair of Fetchings for my daughter, Mandy. I used 1 skein of the Knit Picks Wool of the Andes yarn my Sockret Pal sent me at the beginning of the year. Mandy says they need the thumbs...I'm still trying to work up my nerve to make those stitches live again. This is something I've never done before.

You can do it. Pick a time that you aren't rushed or in a hurry.
Just pick up each live stitch as you pull the waste yarn out.
It helps me to use smaller double pointed needles to pick up the live stitches and then right before starting to knit slip the sts to the correct DPN size.
I love the color.
I made Fetching a few weeks ago for this KAL, and was nervous about that also! I had never done anything like that either. It was not as tough as it looked. I found it helpful to have a crochet hook on hand to help with this part, so I didn't lose any loops.
Good luck! I look forward to seeing the completed gloves!
I've made a couple of sets of Fetching mittens and I've used this same thumb construction on a couple of other pairs of mittens (gussets always end up too big for me!)
You can pick up the stitches without removing the waste yarn, then when the stitches are safely on your needles you pull out the waste yarn to reveal the gap for the thumb.
Just stick your dpn through the front loop of the v of each stitch below the waste yarn and then use another dpn and put it through the front of the v on the stitches above the waste yarn (there should be one more stitch above the waste yarn than below).
Then you carefully pull out the waste yarn with your needles already holding the released stitches!
Pick them up with a size smaller needle and just knit them off onto the correct size. It's the needle you are knitting onto that determines the size of the stitches. You can do it!
